The writer's concerns...

The first post is the questions related to sustainable issue occupying my mind for a long time. There are some other concerns which I am not sure , but somehow affecting the perspective we each have of sustainability.

What are the main goals of sustainability?

To save the nature?
To save human running out of resources?
Creating a livable atmosphere?
To help with human kind to live? Or living happily?
Saving lot of lives today? Avoiding costs?

How are these goals weighed? What are the priorities? avoiding the cost we might end up paying very soon?
how are we planning at the moment to meet these goals?
What about the price we are paying every day?
Are we already used to what we are paying?
Are we living a sustainable life?
How should we define sustainability in daily life of an individual?
What are the criteria of one's sustainable life?
Would it be enough for one to consume the least possible resource to be considered living sustainable?
What is the main reason of consuming resources the way we are doing today?
Who's benefitting the most out of consuming resources?
Is it making us happier?
Are we seeking something which cannot be found in today's life?
Is there anything lost in todays' life?
Can we find it in our ancestors' lives?
Are we using the new tech for what it is designed for?
What is the purpose of all new technologies?

Is it helping with finding a peaceful way with nature?
Are we looking for dominating nature or living in harmony with?
Should we adjust ourselves to nature? To what extent should we adjust?
How much effort are we ready to put into what we believe to be right?
How effective an individual can be in process of greening?
How effective can one be in living a satisfying life?
How is "satisfying life" defined with todays' standards?
How long will these standards last?
Are these standards sustainable?
Does unsustainable have a chance of continuation?

Can we build our environment with a sustainable approach?

  2. Parna,

I think this is a great group of questions that you can work on expanding on throughout the semester. Green construction has become very popular over the last decade or so, but it is often just viewed as another set of rules by many involved in the industry. It is important for all parties involved to understand the actual reasoning behind green construction. Green buildings are not just about the owner being able to put a plaque on the wall or a design-build firm using it as an advantage to win a contract, but rather to actually help the environment. If people begin to concentrate on building green buildings solely because of the environment, the other benefits will follow.

  3. I think it is a really good approach to get started with this class by answering these questions. I like how your questions have covered almost all basics of sustainability right from the idea of sustainability to its effects so far and the future it holds in construction. We are pretty much aware of the benefits of green construction on energy consumption, water efficiency and so on, but some of the questions that focus a lot on the attitude of the builders or thought process towards sustainability should be interesting. I am really looking forward to reading the answers to all the questions and if possible some more issues.
